Moses Hoskins: The Real Deal, Interview with D. Dominick Lombardi, Huffington Post
NEW YORK –57W57ARTS is pleased to announce an exhibition of Moses Hoskins’ multitudinous, collage-based project, Book of Debris 1994 – 1998. Presented in the gallery’s Back Room, this striking body of work serves both as an aesthetically tactile curio as well as a fascinating anthropological record. In its entirety, Hoskins’ sweeping opus is comprised of nearly 100 volumes. The gallery will exhibit several of these distinct pieces and invites the viewing public to directly handle the many pages on display.
Ardently amassed and constructed over a span of 5 years, the Book of Debris consists of various composition books, odd drawing pads and keenly-assembled, hand-bound pages ranging from junk mail to packaging scraps. Teeming with the found street ephemera and everyday miscellany collected upon his frequent walks around the city, Hoskins’ has created a sprawling chronicle of densely layered materials and imagery. Each edition or book within the collection acts as a visually compelling document of time, preserving the definitive materiality of a moment while revealing the transient nature of all things.
Moses Hoskins (b. 1953) was born and raised in Iowa. After attending a few Midwestern colleges he received his BFA from the University of Iowa School of Art & Art History. Residing in New York City since 1988, Hoskins has had solo & group exhibitions in numerous galleries including OK Harris, Karin Sanders Fine Art, Galerie Protégé, and Causey Contemporary. Throughout his career Hoskins has been awarded several prestigious grants from both the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation and The Pollock-Krasner Foundation.
