JOEL HOLUB | Stages | WAITING ROOM

June 2 - July 26, 2024

VIEW EXHIBITION

Most of these miniature paintings reflect my love for the anticipatory moment at the beginning of a theater performance. Other paintings are isolated vignettes or tableaux from imagined and occasionally referenced plays. Through these depictions of stages and curtains, I can reveal theatrical settings and spaces that frame and establish worlds within worlds.

JOEL HOLUB | Bottles | TABLE

March 17 - April 19, 2024

VIEW EXHIBITION

The history of ships in a bottle – in a nut shell, sailors (and prisoners) with lots of time on their hands, and empty gin bottles, would make the tiny elaborate nautical models. To pass the time. To keep the mind and the hands busy. In my studio I began to make these planes in a bottle between working and waiting on other projects. At the same time, when I was making the first bottles, my wife and I were having a transatlantic relationship. This waiting for my wife and, anticipation of her arrival was in the background of my producing these objects. Some of the bottles have taken on more historical references as points of departure.
