STACY FISHER | A Minor Character | MELANIE’S OFFICE
October 1 - November 3, 2023
I recently picked up the experimental novel “The Nature Book” by Tom Comitta which solely consists of quotes from other books describing the natural world. It keeps the parts that are typically filler and omits all human activity. I relate to this swapping of hierarchies and the desire to bring the background to the foreground. As my work has shifted further into the realm of painting, I find myself mesmerized by the basic tools of art making. I am intrigued by the brushstroke and how it creates texture; by pattern and its predictability; by shadow and its contribution to atmosphere. I rely on subtle details to perform well under the spotlight. Traces of construction are visible here and there through nail holes and wood grain, as washes of color shift direction or glide over the space where edges meet. It’s safe to say that there are no major characters in my work- that it thrives on showcasing the minor ones.
