“Lull & Hush consists of a small selection from an ongoing body of work derived from my desire to explore the relationship between light and dark in all of its possible permutations. I chose a limited monochromatic palette in order to specifically focus upon that dynamic spectrum. In the end, the work came to be imbued with worry, fear, wonder and reverence. An unavoidable response to the events of the past few years. The variety of the work resulted from digging into those anxiety-inducing events that have consistently surrounded us and then turning toward quiet, peaceful moments for much needed mental respite. The reduced scale of the work seeks to draw in the viewer closely so as to set the stage for quiet, meditative interactions. This is the “lull” and the “hush” is like the quiet that settles over the sea after a storm.” -JH
Joshua Huyser was born and raised in southwestern Montana on a large cattle ranch for the first several years of his life. His childhood was filled with drawing and painting the wildlife and landscapes that surrounded him. He received his MFA from The School of Art & Art History at the University of Iowa in 2001. He has lived and worked in Minneapolis, Minnesota since 2005. This is Joshua’s second exhibition at 57W57Arts.

In the Waiting Room, Minnesota-based artist Joshua Huyser presents Shivelight, a selection of watercolors depicting singular household objects, such as a drinking glass, a set of measuring cups, or a child’s play toy. Huyser’s astute contemplation of these items, centrally composed and rendered in dreamily matter-of-fact brushstrokes, bestows on them a distinct reverence and ethereality that is all too often overlooked in our everyday experience.
Joshua Huyser was born and raised in Montana. He received his M.F.A. at the University of Iowa School of Art and Art History in Iowa City, Iowa in 2001. He has taught at the University of Northern Iowa and Montana State University. In 2002 he was a guest professor and lecturer at the Herzen Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia working with both American and Russian art students. After moving to Minneapolis in 2005 he began working in the commercial film industry while continuing to exhibit nationally. A 2016 McKnight Fellowship finalist, Huyser actively exhibits, most recently in Milan, London, and Marseille and has work in both public and private collections nationally and internationally.
