TRACY GRAYSON

April 28 - June 9, 2017

Opening Reception: Friday, April 28th, 6-9pm

VIEW EXHIBITION

In the Waiting Room, Tracy Grayson will present paintings from several series made between 1999 and the present. Some of the paintings contain 4 x 6 inch rectangles, the format of the once-ubiquitous snapshot, with its pictorial content faithfully rendered or replaced by a monochrome. In others, pieces of masking tape are traced, assigned color, and organized across the picture plane.  In both cases the literal tracing of the objects assures one to one scale and precise representation. Another series focuses on the perception of light and space and their traditional means of depiction. Here the motifs are sun and sky. In subsequent paintings, the infinite quality of this space is mitigated by a pattern layered across the surface of the painting as both object and image. Each series, like each work, frames questions of objectivity and subjectivity, material fact and the fictions of representation.

After graduating from U.C.L.A., Tracy Grayson began exhibiting in 1985 with a solo show at White Columns. He has been represented by Wolff Gallery, New York, Christine Burgin Gallery, New York, and Michael Kohn Gallery, Los Angeles and included in numerous group exhibits, most recently at Nurture Art and Fresh Window in Bushwick. Reviews of his work have appeared in Art in America, Artforum, The New York Times, and The L.A. Times. A recipient of a New York Foundation of the Arts Fellowship, he currently lives and works in Brooklyn.
